I am a second grade math, spelling, social studies, and science teacher! I earned National Board certification in 2008, and finished my Master's degree in May! I am married and have one daughter (17) who keeps me super busy!
I have thoroughly enjoyed this week off of school! I have done a whole lot of nothing! :) That includes my research proposal which is due next Monday! Why do I procrastinate? I'll never know!
I have a lot planned next week for my students! We have been subtracting with regrouping, and will begin addition and subtraction with regrouping together! With so much focus on learning to subtract with regrouping, I'm afraid they are rusty on their addition skills! We will be working hard to build those skills before Christmas. To help them, I created a scoot game. I will use the addition and subtraction cards in small groups with whiteboards, and then play scoot to review.
I also just uploaded some penguin math stations to TPT.
I'm super excited to begin Christmas Around the World with my students this coming week. I purchased Sarah's (First Grader at Last) Christmas Around the World Scrapbook. I have it all copied, books pulled, crafts planned, and powerpoints made! If you don't have this resource, you should definitely hop over to TPT and pick it up!
We are also beginning to learn about adjectives, so of course I had to get Abby's Let's Get Pop Rockin' Writing Activities! I cannot wait to see their faces when they discover the pop rocks!!! If you don't have this resource, you should hop over to TPT and pick it up also!!
I'll be sure to post pictures next week of our fun activities! I also finally got around to making the infamous crate seats that have been all over pinterest, and my student teacher put up the "Writer's Eye" bulletin board, so I'll snap some pics of those too!
Since I'm such an online shopper and I refuse to fight the crowds on Black Friday, I have decided to have a Black Friday Sale! I am marking my Christmas Cookies Math Stations down from $8 to $2 Friday from 12:01 to 7:00 am! It is suitable for 2nd and possibly 3rd grades.
Crisscross Applesauce in First Grade is having a fabulous giveaway. $20 to an online store--that's right up my alley!! :) I'm thinking if I win that I would choose either Apple or Amazon...or maybe Kohl's (although their Black Friday commercial is killing me!!!), TPT would be nice too...or Sephora....I could go on and on :)
I am in the mood for Christmas! I've watched Lifetime/Hallmark Christmas movies, shopped online, and created some Christmas goodies for my classroom today! All of that, and visited my sister :) I love productive days!
I've uploaded several Christmas themed activities to TPT, so hop on over and check them out! Also, I'll give 2 items from my TPT to the first 3 replies to this post! Just let me know which 2 you want. Don't forget your email address!
I also have Marine and Navy Christmas letters. I love the military clipart from Scrappin' Doodles!
I'm having way too much fun with all of the Christmas themed clipart! I really should be working on my research proposal, but I'm way too distracted :)
Last week, we worked on poetry. I created this simple poetry book. I read examples of each type of poem, and my kiddos went to town! I laughed so much when reading their poems. I wish I had taken some pictures. One of my favorites was an acrostic poem that had "Nuckle Sandwiches for my Dad" for the N! I almost spit out some diet root beer reading that one. The real kicker is that it was written by one of my prissy little girls! I hope it's helpful to those still in school this week, or a keeper for next year. Click on the picture below for the free 5 page book.
The precious graphics are from Scrappin Doodles!
Poems included are acrostic, haiku, free verse, and couplet.
What The Teacher Wants is hosting a linky party about the things we are thankful for. Here is my thankful list...
1. What are you thankful for in your classroom?
I'm most thankful for my students. Yes, we have our "moments", but I'm thankful for their sweet little faces, and the way they light up when they "get it". Also, my smartboard :)
2. What person are you most thankful for? Wow!!! I'm thankful for so many people in my life....but, my daughter is the most precious gift! I have been blessed with a caring daughter, who I'm proud to also call my friend. I love our times in the car, singing loudly and off-key to Aerosmith, Elton John, Billy Joel (and the list goes on). I tell her all the time that she was born in the wrong decade!!! She's a classic rock kinda girl, just like mom! :) 3. What 3 blogs are you most thankful for? I stalk many, many wonderful blogs. I think one of the first blogs I discovered was Erica Bohrer's. She's got great ideas!
Another blog I love is First Grade Blue Skies. Jennifer won my first giveaway, and blogged about my new blog, which sent me several new followers! She's awesome--even if she is an Alabama fan!! :)
And, A Teeny Tiny Teacher is HILARIOUS!!!!!!!
I have many, many more blogs that I love to stalk, but I shall follow the rules and only list 3! :)
4. What guilty pleasure are you most thankful for?
The guilty pleasure that I love the most--don't laugh---Little Debbie Swiss Cakes! I know, pitiful! I only buy them when I'm working on my research proposal, because (I'm kinda embarrassed to admit this) I will eat the whole box in like 2 days!
5. What are you most thankful for? My family--all of them! :)
Well......on Thursday, I will turn the big 4-0!!! I remember being in elementary school and thinking that 30 was old! I SOOOOOO don't feel 40!! I'm having a TPT sale today through Saturday to celebrate!
I worked ALL day Saturday on math stations for Christmas. I printed them all yesterday, laminated, cut and bagged! I'm ahead of the game for once!!!! Hop over to TPT to check them out!
I'm looking forward to a short week this week! I am taking off Friday to go on a camping trip with Dreams Come True. I'm so excited to spend some time at the Teen Bash with some awesome kids and their families. Being a part of this organization is so important to me! If you don't mind saying a prayer for our dream kids, I'd surely appreciate it!
We started pronouns today--after another grueling hour of subtraction with regrouping!! Seriously, they can figure out when to regroup, but are struggling with subtracting! No, _________(insert name here), 10-4 is not 4. I literally said that exact phrase at least 10 times to different kids!!!!!!!!! UUUGGGHHH! Yes, we are starting minute math subtraction tomorrow!! Okay, I feel better now......
So, back to pronouns--I asked if anyone knew what a pronoun was. I got a few crazy answers, and some kinda close ones. I wrote 2 sentences on the board. One with a name, and the other with a pronoun. They immediately "got" it! Some of my math stress subsided!! While working on lesson plans this weekend, I found this You Tube clip. It is a cute Bugs Bunny/Daffy Duck clip which includes pronouns! So, we are watching it tomorrow. I know they will love it! Who said grammar has to be boring! :) After watching the video twice--once just to watch and laugh, the second time to listen for pronouns, we will complete this activity sheet freebie. We will also use this pronoun station activity. I hope you can use these activities when you teach pronouns.
Just a reminder that my Target card giveaway will end today (make sure to comment there). I neglected to put an ending time in my original post--sorry! It will end today at 7:00pm Central time. I'll draw a winner during 1/2 time of the LSU/Alabama game!!! Let me know if you are watching!!!!!
As of now, I have 24 followers--1 more = $25.00 Target card!!
Thanks to all who have followed! I have followed everyone who left a blog address back (if you notice I didn't follow you back, please let me know). I also added buttons, but not sure they all ended up there. I'll check that out tomorrow.
Oh, and a question.......Does anyone know why when I try to post on someones blog, I get a screen that says I don't have permission to view the page??? I can post from my school computer and from my phone, but not my home computer!! It's very frustration trying to leave a decent post using my phone's keyboard!!
